From Oils to Watercolors: The Journey Behind My New Art Series "Dreamscapes"

The last time I wrote a blog post about my art evolving, I talked about working on something new and fresh, something I hadn't done before. Lately, I've been feeling pulled towards all sorts of mediums that I had always been uncomfortable with... inks, watercolors, oils and the likes. There's this beautiful feeling that you get when you just "figure out" a new medium, and learn to control it.

I fell in love with oils last year, and taking inspiration from two of my favorite oil painters, Chris Fornataro and Carol Marine, I decided that the best way to get good at oils would be to paint small and paint often.

And so early this year, began the Dreamscapes journey. I picked simple landscapes, a limited palette of the primaries and white, a 5"x7" canvas board, and set a 30 minute timer to finish a painting. I massively enjoyed doing this! I got back into the habit of painting everyday, and actually started enjoying the process after years! From mixing my own colors, to painting wet on wet, I really got a hang of oil paints, and painted seven paintings, hoping I would have enough to make a 2026 art calendar.

Lo and behold, I soon realized oil paints and solvents are not the best to be around when you're expecting a baby (Yes! 2025 is gonna be a big busy year :)). It's debated whether they're truly toxic or not, but with sickness kicking in, I didn't want to risk it.

That's when I decided to switch to watercolors! I continued with the same subjects, the same limited palette and the same time limit. I'm currently in the midst of what is turning out to be a gorgeous set of paintings, still named Dreamscapes, that I hope to turn into a 2026 calendar.

If you do use old-school calendars, do comment below and tell me if you use a table top one or a wall calendar. I'm trying to decide which one to design!
